The existing leisure centre at Brough Park, Leek required improving and updating to better meet the needs of the local community. This included enlarging the swimming facilitie sand providing additional fitness, studio and social spaces.
As part of the project, the client team at Staffordshire Moorlands District Council saw the opportunity to enhance the existing entrance space and arrival experience for the centre, looking to design a multifunctional, new public space as part of the Sports England Active Environments initiative.
Several initial options were developed, whichthen through extensive consultation with stakeholders, have been developed into the final scheme, which is due to be completed in conjunction with the centre reopening in summer 2026.
The space is focused on a central lawn with opportunities for informal play through undulating mounds, incidental play andfun floor markings to encourage movement. An equipped outdoor gym, pétanque court and games tables offer more formal activities. The space includes a variety seating opportunities including picnic spaces and hammocks, along with new planting areas.
Due to the funding allowance, the team have worked closely with the client team, suppliers and main contractor to ensure the original ethos and vision of the space is delivered, but within the budgets and timescales required.
A diverse, dynamic, welcoming green space, which encourages both formal and informal activities for all ages and generations.
